Jim Leyland has a song in his heart, and it is beautiful.

Sometimes you come across information that is so magical, so fantastical, so very wonderful you do not know what to do with it. This is one of those times.

Jim Leyland can sing. Well. Really well, actually. (That’s a video link, kids and kittens, and there’s an ad that comes up before it starts, but just wait it out, it is gloriously worth it.)

I am (for once) not being facetious. It’s completely unexpected, because his speaking voice is so gruff, but the man can carry a tune. The first time I watched the video I thought that we were hearing a recording and Leyland had not started singing yet. He’s certainly loads better at singing than I am.

Bonus points in the video for the Tigers players watching him sing in a kind of quiet awe, and for Dombrowski cracking up at the end. Let’s face it, if we had been getting this kind of Tigers content all offseason long, it would have been much more bearable.

The Freep is really on a roll today: also check out a few Tigers dressed up as firefighters, paying close attention to Curtis Granderson the Fireman, which is a sight so awesometastical that I MAY have made high-pitched squealing noises when I first viewed it.

Oh, and blah blah blah, negotiations with Brandon Lyon, blah blah, supposedly Todd Jones v. 2.0, blah blah, who cares. JIM LEYLAND SINGING. CURTIS GRANDERSON THE FIREMAN. These are the important things, my friends.

  1. Oh my god, that drawing. Combined with the video it is TOO AWESOME FOR ME TO HANDLE.

  2. Wow. I agree with PudgeforPrez. That video was AWESOME.

  3. I can’t get enough of these illustrations. Many applause! It looks like they take some time to complete.

PfP, I do what I can.
Brian, well, they are not instantaneous. Although in reality the coloring takes 5000 times longer than the actual drawing for a little one like this and every time I say, ‘I AM SO LAZY I WILL NOT COLOR THIS’ but then I do because I love you guys THAT MUCH. :P

ivan, so was the heart expansion pre or post demise? :P
sportz4life, thank you! I do think it’s one of my more… uh, EXPRESSIVE efforts… :D

  8. I’m just speechless. But, then again, go back and listen to his infamous “horse-$h*t” rant from a few months back … Listen to the quality of his voice in that. Not so gruff as I had imagined. Quite clear, actually. Amazing, considering the number of “coffin nails” the man has put away over the years.

You know, Jeff, you’re kinda right… yet I’d swear his everyday speaking voice is gruff in most interviews. Maybe all those years of having to yell at baseball players with the maturity of first graders forced him to develop a clear voice.

    Uhh. Post. It’s a miracle! :P

  11. I am a newcomer to your site (which I absolutely adore, you are a combination of everything I love about baseball, the internet, and the Tigers). Anyway, I just saw this post and therefore just learned of Leyland’s secret inner diva. I tried to click on the link, but could only get today0s Freep. The video seems to have been erased from the internet. I don’t think I can go on living without seeing this. Did you perhaps download and save a copy?
