WBC Pool 2 Puerto Rico/Venezuela

postscript: things we learned from this game:

–Ian Snell, man of many names
–this match-up created the best crowd since we left the Tokyo Dome
–Magglio Ordonez supports Hugo Chavez, everyone in the rest of the world including Venezuelan baseball fans is infuriated and disgusted by this
–KING FELIX
–arepas
–“crossfiring”, it is a mystery
–FIRST INSTANT REPLAY OF THE WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC

Many thanks to Snuppy the Hound, ivantopumpyouup, tigerstyler, anaaki, and Jeff for joining me to watch this amazing example of WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC EXCITEMENT!! Instant replay! Pitching!!! Ian Snell’s million names!!!! Rick Sutcliffe thinking that K-Rod is still playing for the Angels!!!!!!!

The next liveblog will be tomorrow, 11pm, Japan/Korea (MLBN). It’ll be at BCRS. Yu Darvish will be pitching for Japan. Not To Be Missed.

Oh my goodness I just need to mention that in the Cuba/Mexico game, they are talking about how different it is playing in the various Latin American countries, as opposed to playing in the US. Some dude in the booth (I believe it’s Dan Shulman) says,

“I’m going to take my kids down there, because there’s a lot of poverty, but people are happy. There’s a great lesson there.”

Do they even realize what they are saying? Or are they so complacently privileged that it seriously does not even cross their minds? I do wonder.

  1. This on TV at all?

  2. Looks like ESPN at 8pm. (Thank GOODNESS! We won’t have to listen to Harold Reynolds prattle on about god knows what!)
And and speaking of Pudge, he went to my favorite NL team…. sure will be weird to see him when I go down to Houston this summer for a Tigers series.

Yup, it’ll be on ESPN. Or ESPN Deportes, if you’re into that sort of thing.
eta: woo hoo, redundant comment is redundant!

Pudge with the Astros is BUGGING ME OUT.

  5. lol forever at Carlos’ face there. The very definition of awkward.

  6. But they’re foreigners so they aren’t real people!
Seriously though, I don’t know about Miguel supporting Chavez. I do get woo’d by his hair but now I may not be so enthralled.

  7. You’re right. It is going to be on ESPN and ESPN Deportes En Espanol. And speaking of which, Ivan Maldonado will pitch for Puerto Rico beginning in March 2013. Brazil will likely use Kleber Ojima or Claudio Yakomara as the starting pitcher for Qualifier 3 of the World Baseball Classic in Panama City. When the qualifiers return in 2016, maybe The Bahamas, Sweden, and Greece will be named to their respective pools. See you in 2013!

  8. Qualifiers 3 and 4 of the World Baseball Classic opens November 14-15 in Panama City and Chinese Taipei. My predictions for both qualifiers are Brazil and New Zealand. I watched the first 2 qualifiers in Jupiter and Regensburg and it was great. Spain won the Jupiter qualifier and Germany won the Regensburg qualifier. Great Britain did very well finishing at 1-2 in the qualifiers with a win against Czech Republic and lost to Canada and Germany. I hope Team GB gets both sets of uniforms for the 2016 Qualifiers because they only used 1 set of uniforms for 2012 as a last resort via Home/Away assignment by the IBAF. See you in 4 years time!
