Happy Canada Day, and a public service announcement

Canada fans at Fenway photo by Samara Pearlstein

Happy Canada Day to all you Northerners! In honor of the day, I think the Blue Jays should have a resounding win. Yes, let us all hope for this today. For Canada! The fact that they’re playing an AL Central team has nothing to do with this wish of mine, of course.

I don’t think the Tigers have had a Canadian player since Matt Stairs back in 2006, but that’s OK. Detroit is close to Canada, and Paws knows those people in the UP are practically Canadian anyways. We can celebrate the maple leaf too (especially as it’s no longer hockey season).

And now your public service announcement: Today is the last day to vote Miguel Cabrera into the All Star game! We have until midnight tonight (Thursday)! You can vote 25 times PER EMAIL ADDRESS. Do you know how easy it is to make new email addresses? It’s really easy. You can make a bunch of email addresses on, say, Yahoo in no time at all. And then you can vote with those additional email addresses. Um, if you want to. You know. For the good of the nation.

  1. Canada day is celebrated with gusto here in Minnesota. We are, like MI, a border state. Lots of hardy Minnesotans paddle the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) each summer. Canadian moose have been known to wander across from Manitoba into Koochiching County. But Minnesota’s love for Canada has grown rapidly in recent years, and you know why. Yes, it’s that first baseman named Morneau and his Canadian lumber. So, on Canada Day, we respectfully request a vote or two for Morneau. Miggy can pinch hit for Justin and provide some late-inning heroics for the American League.

    Justin gets the start.

  2. I just got in another 27 and 28 votes for Miggy on two different e-mail addresses. (Please tell me real elections aren’t this screwed up.)

  3. I just registered 2 more email addresses …. and check this out from MLB.com “But over the past 72 hours of exclusive online balloting, Cabrera has made a strong bid to close the gap, receiving 70 percent more online votes than Teixeira and almost 10 percent more than Morneau.”

I’m off to make more emails now. ;)

  4. times up! I kept going right to the buzzer!

  5. Live in a border town and it’s about a 40 minute drive to Detroit for us. Attend 8 to 10 games a year in Detroit……and by the way I hate the Jays !! Thanks for the Canada Day shout out :)
